UK Commits RAF Refueling Support to Saudi Arabia Amid Houthi Strikes
The move follows a direct appeal from Riyadh, which formally requested "military support" from London. Burnham signed off on the request after consulting with Secretary of State for Defense Wes Streeting and Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, government officials confirmed.
Officials stressed the mission carries strict boundaries: the assistance will remain "time limited," with the initial commitment expected to run "for weeks" rather than indefinitely.
The support arrives against the backdrop of Yemen's grinding civil war, where the Houthis continue battling the country's internationally recognized government — a government Saudi Arabia has long backed militarily and financially. In recent days, the Houthis have claimed a string of drone and ballistic missile strikes aimed at the Saudi capital Riyadh, alongside energy infrastructure lining the kingdom's Red Sea coastline.
Under the arrangement, British aircraft would refuel Saudi fighter jets mid-flight, extending their operational range and endurance as they work to intercept and destroy incoming Houthi missiles and drones, UK officials said.
Speaking to journalists aboard his flight to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Burnham tied the decision to broader economic and strategic stakes for Britain. "I go back to the point I made about cost-of-living pressures and acting to secure the interests of Britain and the wider region," he said.
He added: "Because of course Saudi Arabia has been experiencing attacks, is looking at potential further disruption, and we need to keep those pathways open, and hence our agreement to the request."
